Warning Sirens
The City of Dyersburg has 9 emergency warning sirens that are used to alert the community of local emergencies. These sirens are placed at strategic locations throughout the city to ensure that everyone who is outside of a building or structure can hear the alerts. The sirens are not designed to alert persons inside buildings or homes.
A steady alert tone is used for a local warning, while a wail tone (wavering) is used to alert residents of a national emergency. When you hear the sirens, tune to a local television or radio news station to learn the extent of the emergency.
Examples of a local emergency could include events such as tornado warnings, hazardous chemical spills, etc. Examples of a national alert could be a chemical, biological, or nuclear attack against the United States.
Do not call 911 or 311 when you hear the sirens blow, as this ties up valuable resources. Information will be disseminated over local TV and radio broadcast stations
.
When a Tornado Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Dyer County, the sirens will be activated and sound a steady tone for 3 minutes. If the storm is tracking toward the City of Dyersburg, the siren will cycle on for 3 minutes, then off for 2 minutes, continually, until the threat has diminished. There is no all clear signal.
